Pertussis

print

The best way to protect against pertussis (whooping cough) is by getting the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccination. Doctors recommend that all children get the vaccine.

Why should my child get vaccinated:
  • Helps protect your child from whooping cough (pertussis), a potentially serious disease (and also protects against diphtheria and tetanus)
  • Prevents your child from having violent coughing fits from whooping cough
  • Helps keep your child from missing school or childcare (and keeps you from missing work to care for your sick child)

Symptoms: Pertussis in its early stages appears to be nothing more than the common cold. Early symptoms can last for 1 to 2 weeks and usually include:
  • Runny nose
  • Low-grade fever (generally minimal throughout the course of the disease)
  • Mild, occasional cough
  • Apnea – a pause in breathing (in babies)

Parents and caregivers should contact their healthcare provider with any questions or if your family member has experienced any of the symptoms listed above.

Prevention: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends pertussis vaccines for infants, children, adolescents, and adults. CDC also recommends vaccination for pregnant women during each pregnancy. If you have questions about a vaccine for yourself or a child, please consult your healthcare provider, or contact the Medina County Health Department. We provide immunizations at our onsite Health Center and at clinics across Medina County.
