A: We serve all residents of Medina County. We are here to prevent disease, promote well being, and protect your health. Wherever you live, work, and play – we are your health department.

A: Our services are funded by local property tax levies (46%); client fees (21%); State funds, including some Federal pass through funds (28%); and transfers (6%).

♦ Public Health Nurses provide immunizations to prevent diphtheria, polio, pertussis, influenza, pneumonia, and meningitis. No child is denied an immunization due to an inability to pay, protecting that child from vaccine-preventable diseases, and protecting others he/she comes into contact. ♦ Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians provide car seat safety installations and inspections free of charge, making sure infants and children are safe and secure. Click here for additional information on car seat safety.
 
♦ Communicable disease staff conducts investigations to ensure that diseases, such as salmonella, whooping cough, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted diseases are not spread to others. Click here for additional information on communcable disease.
 
♦ Registered Sanitarians inspect schools to ensure proper food safety, playground safety, hazardous material storage, proper lighting, sanitation, water quality, and building and ground maintenance. Click here for additional information on all inspection and permit programs.
 
♦ Dental Health Services staff provide prevention services (cleanings, exams, x-rays, sealants), restorative work (fillings), endodontic treatment (root canal), extractions (removal of teeth), and dentures/partials to seniors, adults, and children. ♦ Health Education Specialists provide health information to residents on a variety of topics through our website, presentations, community health fairs, tip sheets, and participation in community health initiatives, like the Step Up To Health Coalition. We monitor the health status of our residents to develop programs in physical activity, tobacco prevention, nutrition education, and obesity prevention.
 
Q: How are State and Federal funds used in Medina County?
A: State and Federal funds provide prevention programs.
 
♦ Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is funded by federal dollars. $1,473,177 worth of food vouchers provided to pregnant, post-partum, and breastfeeding mothers were redeemed at Medina County stores in 2010. Click here for information on WIC.
 
♦ For H1N1 flu response in 2009-2010, $700,000 in grant dollars was used to provide over 23,000 vaccines to Medina County residents through 60 school-based clinics and nine community-based clinics.
