Vision and hearing screening

Have your childrens vision tested before they starts Kindergarten (ideally by three years of age) and annually until 18 years of age. As much as 80% of learning is visual, so ensuring children can see properly will help them reach their full potential in the classroom. Public Health Nurses provide basic visual acuity screening and audiometer hearing tests for children three years of age and older. In the event a visual or hearing problem is identified, referrals for follow-up with advanced health professionals are made. Services are provided by appointment. Walk-ins will be accommodated as the schedule permits. To schedule an appointment for clinic services, please call 330-723-9688 or 1-888-723-9688 (Option 1).

Dental checkup

"First visit by first birthday" sums it up. Your child should visit a pediatric (child) dentist when the first tooth comes in, usually between 6 and 12 months of age. Make an appointment for your child to see a dentist every six months. If your children havent had their teeth examined prior to starting school, now is a good time for it. Regular checkups and cleanings help detect and prevent dental problems early. If you do not have a dentist because you cannot afford one, call the Medina County Health Department Dental Services at 330-725-8794 for an appointment. For more information about MCHD Dental Services click here.

Backpack basics

Your childrens backpack should fit properly and shouldnt be too heavy for them to carry. It shouldnt be more than 10% to 15% of their body weight and should have broad shoulder straps and a waist strap that keeps the bag firmly on the spine. Watch for warning signs that the bag may be too heavy to carry such as sore shoulders or changes in posture.

Nutrition and physical activity

Ensure your children have a healthy breakfast before heading to school in the mornings, and help them pack a nutritious lunch. Planning meals ahead of time and involving children in planning and preparation can make this task more manageable and fun. Set a good example and promote good health habits for children by eating healthy and being physically active. Click here for nutrition tips and healthy recipes. You can also request inspection reports for your school building and cafeteria by contacting the Environmental Health Division at 1-888-723-9688 (Option 3).

What does research say?
Obesity is at epidemic levels with 29% of Ohio adults and almost 19% of our 3rd graders categorized as obese (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010; Ohio Department of Health, 2007). In Medina County, 33% of our 7th grade students were found to be overweight or obese in 2007. A study of a group of 184 Medina County 9th grade students determined nearly 40% were overweight or obese (MCHD, 2011).
The Medina County Health Department recognizes that obesity has become epidemic in our community and is committed to reducing the childhood obesity rate in Medina County. Through funding from the Nursing Division’s Child and Family Health Services Grant, the Health Department has an Obesity Prevention Team including health educators, registered dietitians, and registered nurses.

The Obesity Prevention Team provides a variety of programs and services focused on the prevention and/or treatment of childhood obesity in Medina County. Services range from direct patient and family care to community outreach programming and consultation.

The Medina County Health Department provides the following obesity prevention services:

Individual/Family Consultation
This service is provided to families found to be at-risk due to lack of medical insurance or financial need (Medicaid participation). Children must be referred by the Medina County Health Departments Child and Family Health Clinic, School Nurse, or qualified physician. There may be a fee for services.
Schools and Child/Day Care Centers:
  1.  School Wellness Technical Support
    • Assistance creating action plans, goals and objectives from mandated wellness policies.
    • Representation from the Medina County Health Department and assistance on District Wellness Committees.
    • Information and assistance with improving vending, school parties and fundraisers, and increasing physical activity throughout the school day.
  2. Faculty/Staff Development
    1. Curriculum integration – team members are available to provide an in-service with technical support on ways to integrate health information across disciplines throughout the school day. Sample lessons plans included as well as resources for free or low-cost handouts, posters, and more.
    2. Consequences of using food as a reward – a brief in-service easily added in to a packed agenda that discusses the impact of using food as a reward and options for breaking the cycle.
    3. Other topics available upon request.
  3. 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! -  This flexible program focuses on increasing healthy eating behaviors and physical activity through simple messages and a lot of fun. Messages focus on the behaviors that increase risk for obesity: low fruit and vegetable intake; screen time; lack of physical activity; and over consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.

The Obesity Prevention Team is working with the following to incorporate the  5-2-1-0 Lets Go! program into their facilities during the 2011-2011 school year:
  • 14 Child Care and Head Start facilities in Medina County
  • The Highland Local School District
  • The Medina City School District
  • St Ambrose School
If your school or child-care facility would like to team up with the Medina County Health Department for the 2012-2013 school year, contact Sharon L. Jaeger, MS, RD, LD at 330-662-0462.

Community Organizations
The Obesity Prevention Team is available to provide group education to community organizations involving children or those who care for children including places of worship, children’s groups, home-schooling groups, parent organizations, daycares, and Boy/Girl Scout troops.
